킬로미터즈 오브 잉글리시
(Kilometers of English)
저는 두 가지 형태의 수업을 하고 있어요.
1. 일반 영어 과외 (Standard English Tutoring)

KILOMETERS OF ENGLISH
Welcome to Kilometers of English, a new kind of English class for people who like to walk locally and somewhat far afield! This is the official blog for Kilometers of English, called Kevin's New Walk.
In fact, I offer two kinds of classes:
1. Standard English Tutoring (more expensive)
Location and Rates: This is done at your home or somewhere public, like at a café, at a friendly church, or at whatever location you find comfortable and secure. The hourly rate is W50,000. You can pay per month, per week, per hour, etc. This kind of tutoring is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. We can do 60-minute, 90-minute, or 120-minute sessions each time we meet.
Who is Eligible: Tutoring is for ADULTS ONLY. I have a business registration that allows me legally to tutor adults, but I cannot legally tutor minors.
Subject Matter: Subject matter for this kind of tutoring ranges from general or focused conversation to writing practice to TOEIC or GRE-level test preparation (English/Verbal, not Math/Quantitative... unless you want to learn about math problems in English). Otherwise, we will focus on expanding vocabulary, improving pronunciation, and especially improving grammar (in my experience, over 90% of student mistakes are grammatical!).
2. Kilometers of English (class while walking)
As above, these walking classes are ADULTS ONLY! And they will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Look for announcements on 당근마켓/Karrot Market and elsewhere, including this blog. When you find my online name, 비그호미니드 (bighominid = 대원인, or 大原人—big, hairy, ugly, primitive), please follow me to find my ads more easily.
General Information: The classes take place mostly in the evenings during weekdays with groups of up to 10 people who will usually meet me at my apartment building to begin the walk (some routes will have a different meeting place). The classes are generally much easier than private tutoring but also much more physically active, so please be able to walk at least 10 km! The idea is that we will usually walk locally, but some special walks will require us to meet elsewhere (for example, at Yangpyeong Station if we walk to Yeoju City). Walk distances will range from 10K walks to 35K walks (on weekends). Each walk is a single, stand-alone class; there is no larger curriculum, so please come, enjoy each other's company, and learn a few words, expressions, and grammar points. There is no blackboard, no need to take notes, and no homework. Easy! Come to one class, and you're done! But if you want to join another class, you are welcome to do so.
If You Are Interested in a Walk: If you see the announcement for a walk that interests you, please just come on the day of the walk (but look for cancelation announcements in case of bad weather, etc.).
Class Agenda and Procedure: The agenda for every walk is simple: (1) learn 10-15 vocabulary words about a given topic, (2) learn 5-10 expressions related to that topic, and (3) learn 3-5 grammar points related to that topic. We will be spending several hours together as we walk, so we will have plenty of time for informal quizzes and review. Whenever I teach a point about vocabulary, expressions, or grammar, we will stop for maybe five minutes. Review will take place while we are walking, and the day's final quiz will take place at the very end. The day's topic and lesson details will appear the next day on this blog for you to review.
Fees: The fee for these walking classes will vary according to distance.
• 10-14 km walk = W30,000/person• 18K walk = W35,000• 26K walk = W40,000• 30-35K walk = W45,000
Cancellation by the Teacher: Cancellation because of weather, yellow dust, etc. will be announced the day before. You do not pay for these classes until the day of the class, so there should be no reason for students to cancel. Only the teacher, not the students, can cancel the class. As a student, if you can't come to a given class, simply don't come but do think about joining a later class.
Risk of Injury and Indemnity Form: Because these classes involve physical activity, there is always a risk of injury, so every time you take a class, you must sign a waiver of liability declaring your awareness of the risk of walking, your willingness to take the risk of walking, your awareness of safety rules, and indemnification of me and my company (Kilometers of English). See this blog's sidebar for a link to the PDF file. Click the link, read the form, then sign the form when you come to class (a printed form will be provided to you).
Quitting before the End of the Walk: Before you walk with us, you must make sure you are capable of walking whatever the distance is—10 km, 14 km, 18 km, 26 km, 30 km, 33 km, 35 km. If you can't walk any farther and have to stop or give up, I or the other students will call you a Kakao Taxi, Uber, etc. and wait with you until the taxi comes, then the rest of us will continue on our route. There is no refund if you quit!
Drink and Snacks: I will provide a 500 cc bottle of water. You are also welcome to bring your own (healthier!) food.
First-aid Kit: I always bring along my first-aid kit if there are any injuries, but if an injury is too severe, we will have to call an ambulance.
Weather: I personally walk rain or shine, but for the purposes of our English classes, I will cancel and reschedule walks if it rains, snows, or becomes too hot. I will also cancel if the air quality (미세먼지 등) is too poor. Remember, you will not pay for the walking class until you actually arrive for the session, so if I cancel the walk one day before it happens, you don't have to worry about refunds.
Schedule: During the summer, all walks will be evening walks (as mentioned above). In the fall however, when it gets cooler, Saturday walks (which will always be 14 km or more) will begin in the early morning and go for as long it takes. My walking classes will therefore be on the following schedule:
Mondays (all year): 10K walk
Wednesdays (all year): 10K walk
Fridays (all year): 10-14K walk
Saturdays (summer until September 30): evening 18K walks
Saturdays (early to late fall—October 1-November 30): morning 18-35K walks
Saturdays (early-late spring—March 10-April 10): morning 18-35K walks
Saturdays (summer until September 30): evening 18K walks
Winter walks may be possible if there is no snow or ice. Please dress appropriately! And if there is a chance of bad weather during the walk, be prepared for that, too! "Crazy" nighttime walks that last until morning may also be possible. Look for announcements on this blog.
Routes: The reason why I call my little business "Kilometers of English" is that I can attach a number to the front of that name and make a title like "26 Kilometers of English" or "33 Kilometers of English." In that spirit, then, here are my walking routes (which are also all bike paths):
10 Kilometers of English: Daecheong Stn. to the Tan-cheon/Han River confluence & back
14 Kilometers of English: Daecheong Stn. to the Jamshil Bridge & back
18 Kilometers of English: Daecheong Stn. to Jeongja Stn. in Seongnam/Bundang
25 Kilometers of English: Daecheong Stn. to Hanam City Starfield
33 Kilometers of English I: Yangpyeong Stn. to Yeoju Bus Terminal
33 Kilometers of English II: Cheongna International City Stn. to Gayang Stn.
35 Kilometers of English: Hanam City Hall Stn. to Yangpyeong Stn.
Other routes are also possible.
