Here is this week's Kilometers of English walking calendar. If you want to do a walk, just come to the lobby of Daecheong Tower on the day you want to walk. You don't need to reserve in advance; just show up. Most of these walks are 10K except for Saturday, 8/15, which is an 18K walk. When you arrive at the meeting place, please sign the waiver if you haven't done so before. The 10K walks are W30,000; the Saturday walk is longer, so it's W35,000.

사슴2팀/Deer Team 2 Walking English Class: review/복습

This class had learners of mixed levels—one of whom was a beginner (the mom), the other of whom was much more advanced (the daughter)—so conversation involved a lot of funny misunderstandings and colorful attempts at communication. It was a very entertaining class, and I think we all learned something. Here's a review of most of the material we covered, with Korean translations where possible so that Mom can have a slightly better grasp of the vocabulary, grammar, and expressions. Many examples will be provided so the lesson material can be seen in context.

사슴1팀 산책 영어 수업/Deer Team 1 Walking English Class: review/복습

This post will be almost entirely in English.

I had canceled today's walk because the weather forecast, for several days, showed rain on Sunday. I had originally chosen Sunday because, weeks ago, it had been the the only day not to have rain. But that changed over time, and Sunday ended up looking like the worst day of rain. Then suddenly late Saturday, something changed, and Sunday had become clear. Monsoon season in a mountainous area can be very frustrating; the weather is very unpredictable, so canceling or not canceling is a gamble either way. I decided not to cancel, and my student was gracious and flexible enough to join me for a very nice walk.

So we had a great 10K walk this evening even though it was hot and humid. My one student for this walk already spoke English very well, so I was afraid she wouldn't learn very much from me since she already knew so much, but she insisted that she had learned a lot. Thank you for coming to class and having a fun stroll with me to the Han River and back!

Here's most of the vocabulary we covered (and this lesson was mostly about vocabulary):

bank transfer (n.) = an electronic transfer of funds from one bank account to another
     Bill made a bank transfer to his cousin.
wire transfer (n.) = an electronic transfer of funds from one bank account to another
     Susan didn't get the wire transfer from Anne.
to wire/transfer money (v.) = to send money electronically from one bank account to another
     Steve wired money to his daughter, a college student.
     Claire transferred $200 to her grandmother's account.
to vent (v.) = to express one's uncontainable anger or frustration about something
     My kids vented their anger at me. My kids vented at me. They're just venting.
     The volcano vented gas and smoke into the atmosphere.
pejorative (adj.) = negative in meaning, association, or connotation
     A word like "bum" has a pejorative meaning in American English.
cicada (n.) = a large flying insect that stays buried in the ground for seventeen years
     We could hear the loud, summertime noise of the cicadas in the trees.
17-year locust (n.) = cicada
     The farm's tree-lined edge was filed with 17-year locusts.
buzzing (n., adj,) = a vibrating, humming, or even harshly rasping sound (as of bees or cicadas)
     The fly's buzzing in my ear was starting to bother me.
     That buzzing sound is loud and obnoxious.
Buzz off! = a slang way to say "Go away!" as if one were shooing away an insect
     The mom told her kids to buzz off so she could watch TV.
shaman spider (n.) = a species of large, orb-weaving spiders originally from East Asia
     Shaman spiders have found their way to America aboard planes and boats.
     The banner of this blog shows a shaman spider that's missing two legs.
hermitage (n.) (암자) = a separate or isolated place inhabited by a hermit
     Many Buddhist temples have hermitages for monks who meditate in seclusion.
introverted (adj.) = preferring aloneness and isolation; unsociable
     My son is so introverted that he hates even small groups of people.
heavy hitter (n.) = a baseball player with a high batting average; (slang) an important person
     George Lucas, despite being in his 80s, is still a heavy hitter in Hollywood.
confluence (n.) (합류부) = a point where two watercourses flow together
     The confluence of the Tan Creek and the Han River is loved by many fishermen.
aerate (v.) = to oxygenate or otherwise allow air to flow through
     They aerated the room by opening the windows after she had burned the steak.
     The builders aerated the creek by putting stones in the path of flowing water to cause turbulence.
raccoon dog (n.) (너구리) = a raccoon-like four-legged animal that lives by creeks and rivers
     The family of raccoon dogs seemed completely unafraid of humans.
fraternal twins (n.) (이란성 쌍둥이) = twins born at the same time but not genetically identical
     My boss has two sons who are fraternal twins.

The one big expression we covered was:

The phrase single file functions as an adverb. Adverbs answer questions like how, where, when, or even why. How should you walk? Single file.

To walk single file is to walk in a column instead of walking abreast (or shoulder-to-shoulder). This is a polite thing for a group to do when walking on a narrow path, and my student and I both agreed that groups of people who crowd out others on a narrow path are being rude and inconsiderate. I'm glad to know I'm not alone in thinking this!

Some grammatical points:

1. using get to mean "become," as in to get older. Other get/become expressions:

2. to be a tributary of/to: a tributary is a watercourse that flows into another watercourse. There are several words that all share the -tribut- root and have somewhat similar meanings:

• tributary: a watercourse that flows into (gives its water to) another watercourse
• contribute: to give (money, food, work, time, etc.) to a cause or a group or some other thing
• distribute: to give out (evenly) to many people or things
• retribution: revenge; the giving out of evil for evil, harm for harm, bad for bad, etc.
• tribute: something given as a gesture of honor, respect, celebration, etc.

The Tan Creek is a tributary of/to the Han River. (X is a tributary of/to Y.)

My grandmother always contributes to the veterans' fund.

We distributed food to the homeless people at Seoul Station.

God's retribution for your horrible sin will be swift and sure.

This song is a tribute to all the soldiers who died in the war.
